The Advantages Of Hypertext

what are the advantages of using hypertext? I always though hypertext was just some sort of lingo that computer junkies used. Over time, I have figured out what it is, and to be honest, I still sort of think its what I used to think it was.

One of the biggest advantages of hypertext that I found, was that it supports really good browsing capabilities. using hypertext allows users to control more advanced browsing systems, not just internet explorer.

Hypertext also allows the electronic media to store large quantities of information. Entire servers can held stored on-line through hypertext.Hypertext also allows better visuals and a faster navigation through different huge numbers of entries.

Its quite sad really. I learned how to use hypertext coding and am able to do it pretty well, but up to this point, had no idea why it as used or what the benefits of it was.

New Technology in New Media

the area of new media, although relatively new,  does have endless limits. Trying to search for new designs and new types of technology in new media results in many products. Allot of the products I found, help in the design of a company or a personal website.

The tools that I thought were more interesting, were the ones that helped to mold two or more types of communication into one.  Sharewood Picnic 83 is an on-line program that allows users to make international phone calls through their computer’s internet browser. This program charges the user a fractionated price per minute of each international call they make.

I feel like a program like this could be useful, but at the same time, if the program costs you the same price as making the same call using your normal phone service, the computer program doesn’t seem to serve a real purpose.

One real interesting new media application that i discovered while perusing the internet was this program called voxci. it is a free service that allows you to use your handheld phone as a computer microphone to be able to create audio posts on on-line social networks.

This service gives users their own on-line VoiceChannel over the phone, so they can record their actual opinions and post, even announce an event.  I think this product would be a good tool if large quantities of people used it, but the product is still in the beta testing stage, so it will be some time before the product will be able to be used by a large community of people.

What Exaclty Is New Media

What exactly is new Media. taking a class called writing for new media, you would think that i would know exactly what new media is. I have a good understanding of what it is, but my knowledge of that new media is, is just a basic understand. I worked this summer writing and helping edit and create a website for NBC universal, and from that i got a good understanding of what new media is. programs and online interfaces used to connect people across the entire country, and world.

But even on the first day of class, we divulged into programs and websites devoted to new media that i had never heard of or seen. there are programs specifically designed to help people use the internet and the computer as a tool to develop and create ideas that one or more people have an interest in.

Wikipedia, the Internets most controversial and debated encyclopedia, describes new media as the overall globalization of the computer as a communications tool. for being such a debated website, i feel this is a pretty basic description. the site offers alot of key information about what falls under the category of new media.

The prologue pdf file that i read had some good insight into what new media allows usewrs to do. It says that new media allows users to user the computer the same way filmmakers used movies and video to see and create moments. Us as computer users can use tools and programs to create ideas with words, pictures and even videos in one interface, o create an overall idea.

The computer is not just a tool used to write papers or search the Internet, but now a conglomeration of all of those things. it isa remarkable tool, and i believe that over the course of the spring i will be able to further my knowledge of the computer and the interne so i can fully use it to create a unique idea.

The Problems With Blogging

I never really thought about what problems could arise when working with blogs. But after doing some research and reading some blogs about problems people have had, it has become more apparent that blogging is more difficult to successfully do that once previously thought.

one of the most difficult things to do when searching for blogs, is to, well, search for blogs. You can type in a google or yahoo search ” Sports blogs” but what you find is a million google responses with the word “sports” loosely used  is any of a number of non-sports related blogs. Some are conglomerate sites with thousands of journals, but the area you’re searching for may have only one blog in it.

The second problem with blogs is content. If you find a descent “sports blog” it could end up being a constant chat back in forth between buddies about a certain sports team and how the two guys thought they played this weekend. it is very hard to find blogs with true citizen journalistic articles about the whole realm of the sports world. Atleast that’s what i am looking for when i want to find a good blog on sports. I’m looking for basically a rough newspaper style of different topics in the sports world. Maybe one guy wants to write about the best dunks in the week of college basketball, while another guy writes about why the New England Patriots are getting so much publicity. This is so much better than a back and forth chat between two guys discussing what the eagles should do about Donovan Mcnabb. Blogs are supposed to be a personal viewpoint expressed to the whole Web community. Wouldn’t you actually like to meet more people like yourself? How is this going to happen if you talk in strange uncommon slang and acronyms that you and your friends can only understand?

Another major problem is the fact that you can find a really cool blog that sparks an interest, but then find that the writer hasn’t added an entry in over a year. I think that is a major problem with internet writing, especially blogs. With a newspaper or a magazine, you are almost guaranteed that a writer is going to consistently have articles in an issue every week, month. But with blogging, ho are you suppose to know when another person updates there blog with a new post. Programs like the google reader make it easy for users to know when blogs have been updated. It is a really useful tool to dispel problems people have with a lack of consistent content.

There are many problems with blogging, but useful tools such as the google reader and active users trying to solve these problems are helping to make blogs more easily accessable.

Monster.com Job requirements

So I went to Monster.com    to see what sort of jobs in the communications industry were open. I went looking for jobs specifically in the editing and production area, with an emphasis on jobs based in a sports market. Ideally, I would love to get a job working for a sports broadcast company such as ESPN, Comcast Sports, or Fox Sports Net.  Other than that, working for specific teams as production assistants is also an option. The requirements for some of the jobs I would all had alot of things in common.

Basic use of Mac operating systems is a must as well as being able to have an understanding of a second language, such as french or spanish.  They want people who know a lot about sports and have a good knowledge for them, which i definitely do have. For the jobs that offering positions as PAs (Production Assistants), knowledge of equipment such as cameras, mics, and basic control rooms is good, and they mention  that I should have experience with these, which I do, since the Com. department here has us using all of those things in class.

One of the key elements that the jobs require is use of Final Cut pro, a leading editing software program that a majority of major companies use, and knowing and being able to use this program is huge. I am fairly good with this program. I learned how to use FinalCut this summer at my internship at NBC4 studios in Washington D.C.

The last thing these jobs require is good hard work and being able to work as part of a team, and being able to give good ideas and take good criticism.

I took a note of some of the jobs that looked interesting because I am in the process of trying to find an internship for this summer as well as a job for when i graduate from Etown next spring.
